Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Collier and four other defensive assistants were fired Sunday, less than 24 hours after the Broncos concluded a disappointing 8-8 season with a 21-10 victory over the New England Patriots.

The 56-year-old Collier, a Broncos coach for 20 years, was the principal architect of the Orange Crush defense of the late 1970s. His defensive units also played major roles in the Broncos' consecutive Super Bowl appearances the last two seasons.Also fired were defensive line coach Stan Jones, linebacker coach Myrel Moore, secondary coach Charlie West and assistant line coach Rubin Carter.
