Taxes derived from the sales of sporting equipment will boost Utah wildlife restoration efforts by $3 million, according to the Interior Department.
Utah will receive the federal funds for fiscal year 1988, which ended Oct. 1, for use in the state's sport fishery funds and wildlife work, Interior Secretary Donald Hodel said. The funds come from an excise tax on the sale of sporting firearms, ammunition, fishing tackle, and motorboat fuels, and from import levies on fishing tackle and boats, Hodel said.
The money raised from those taxes has been used in the past for land acquisition, wildlife habitat improvement and research and hunter education programs.
