Sponsors of Salt Lake City's inaugural Winter Fest want to build the world's largest snowman, to promote their event and Utah's ski resorts.

The Salt Lake Winter Fest is scheduled Feb. 3-5. But spokeswoman Martie Bland said crews will begin piling up snow in early January in an effort to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.Anchorage, Alaska, holds the rec-ord for the world's tallest snowman, a 63-foot, 6-inch giant, Bland said. Winter Fest organizers have enlisted the help of University of Utah mechanical engineering students to go after the mark.

"We'll be starting three weeks ahead of time," she said, hauling in snow and piling it into a huge pyramid for shaping into the snowman.
