The City Council has begun discussing purchasing 18,000 acres of mountain land to help protect the city's watershed.

City Manager Tom Hardy said council members want more study of a plan where the city would purchase about 18,000 acres of privately owned land along Barton and Mill creeks and in North and Ward canyons. The mountain land was originally part of homestead parcels granted to some of Bountiful's early settlers. Today, the land is protected from development by both city and county ordinances.Landowners generally support the plan because they are required to pay taxes on the land that they cannot develop.
