The New York City Opera gave departing general director Beverly Sills a farewell party Monday night, and the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel resounded with celebrity toasts.

"She is so warm, effervescent and fun, you immediately forget her incredible voice. When you do, she gets really annoyed," teased actress Mary Tyler Moore. Moore concluded, "You have garnered as much love as you have praise for your work as an artist and businesswoman, and I toast you."Sills was the opera company's coloratura superstar and for the past 10 years its general director.
