Valhi said that it and Bristar had been unable to reach a definitive agreement on numerous items relating to the sale and that, in Valhi's view, there was no reasonable prospect for coming to agreement in time to complete the sale by year's end.Amalgamated is a major U.S. producer and marketer of refined sugar and byproducts, representing approximately 9 percent of domestic sugar production. For the nine months ending Sept. 30, Amalgamated sold 10.6 million hundredweight of refined sugar while recording pre-tax earnings of $31.2 million on sales of $295.6 million.
