Former government and civic leader Wilbur Chandler Parkinson died Dec. 20, 1988, of causes incident to age. He was 84.

Mr. Parkinson spent 50 years in various Salt Lake City and county positions, including assistant director and director of the City-County Health Department, director of environmental health and sanitary inspector.He was president of the Days of '47 Parade for eight years and president of the Days of '47 Committee for another eight years.

He also was president of the Salt Lake Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and president of the Salt Lake City Employees Association. He worked on various committees of the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Parkinson received numerous awards for his work in government, the Days of '47, civic beautification and the dairy industry. In 1957, for example, he received the Pickett-Webb Award for the outstanding sanitarian in Utah. Twice he received the Samuel J. Crumbine Award for his outstanding health programs.

Mr. Parkinson held several positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was active in Scouting.

Funeral will be Friday noon in the Monument Park 5th Ward chapel, 1930 S. 21st East. Friends may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, or at the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Drive.
