Expansion plans for the Talmage Mathematical Sciences/Computer Building at Brigham Young University have been announced by President Jeffrey R. Holland.
The planned $5.5-million addition will have four levels, including a basement. Construction should begin in March, with completion scheduled for the fall of 1990, Holland said."The expansion is necessary because of the dramatic growth in computer-related education in recent decades, the need for expanded computer laboratories and the increased necessity in this modern age to provide campus-wide instruction in the areas of computer sciences, statistics and mathematics," Holland said.
The 54,254-square-foot project west of the existing building will expand into an adjacent parking lot. Plans include redesigning the lot to recapture some of the parking spaces lost due to the expansion.
The Talmage Building, completed in 1971, will be renovated to provide increased classroom space for mathematics, statistics and computer science disciplines. Additional office space for faculty members and graduate assistants in mathematics and statistics is also planned.
The university's growing Information System Services Department, which provides computer consultation and computing and micrographic functions for the whole campus, will remain in its present location in the Talmage Building.
The new addition will contain a 220-seat auditorium, facilities for 250 computer work stations and office space. A commons study area will link the two buildings.
The facilities will also be used for church services on weekends, Holland said.
