A house destroyed Wednesday after a fire started in the Christmas tree burned again Thursday morning, apparently when embers from the original blaze rekindled.
Two neighbors called 911 Thursday morning at 5:23 a.m. after noticing the house at 7081 S. 24th West was engulfed in flames. The house had been occupied by Carolyn Dodge and her two children.Fire Capt. David Hanney said the same firefighters that doused the Wednesday blaze shortly before noon were nearing the end of a 24-hour shift when they were called back to the house to fight the second fire.
Hanney said the fire started after a match was flipped into the Christmas tree.
Fire investigators determined at the end of the Wednesday fire the $100,000 house was a total loss and would have to be rebuilt.
A fund drive to help the family was initiated Wednesday at West Jordan Elementary School.
