Pope John Paul admires a carving given to him by Yasser Arafat on the final stop in the PLO leader's goodwill tour. During their meeting, the pope said Palestinians and Israelis share "an identical fundamental right to have their own country." A Vatican statement said the the closeness of Christmas "makes still more immediate" the pope's concern.
