Francis D. Gunn, former head of the pathology department at the University of Utah College of Medicine, died Dec. 20, 1988, at his Salt Lake home of causes incident to age. He was 89.
Dr. Gunn headed the U. pathology department from 1944, when the medical school began its four-year graduate program, until 1954. From then until retirement in 1965 he was a pathologist at LDS Hospital.He wrote more than 50 scientific research papers, including a number dealing with experimental pulmonary tuberculosis. He also was author of a chapter in Anderson's Textbook of Pathology on pulmonary tuberculosis.
At the time of his death, Dr. Gunn was Clinical Emeritus Professor of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
He served in the Students Army Training Corps during World War I and as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps Reserves from 1930 to 1935.
Dr. Gunn received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1921, then an M.D. and doctorate from Northwestern University in 1925 and 1930. He served an internship at Buffalo City Hospital, Buffalo, New York, and a fellowship at Buffalo General Hospital.
He taught at Northwestern University Medical School from 1927 to 1944, when he moved to Utah.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 27 at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 2350 E. 13th South. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association or the American Lung Association.
