Gov. Norm Bangerter has asked the State Office of Black Affairs to lead a task force to will develop an award for Utah employers who are taking the lead in training and promoting minorities and women and in providing on-site day care for children.

Betty Sawyer, director of the Black Affairs Office, said Faye Wine, a member of the office's advisory council, will head the effort and will enlist the support of local civic and employment leaders to make the selection. The group will meet next month to set up criteria for the award and to discuss a name for the honor. Officials hope to make the first presentation at the end of next summer.

"It is hoped that this honor will encourage local businesses to develop programs to train and promote minorities and women and that it will also provide incentive for creating day care programs at the business site," Sawyer said.
