Reputed millionaire cattle rancher Leonardo Contreras Subias, who is serving 10 years in prison for cocaine trafficking, has been sentenced to another three years in custody for jumping bail in 1980.
Subias, 42, a key suspect in the 1985 murder of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique Camarena, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Aug. 31 for selling about 2.2 pounds of cocaine to an undercover officer in Monterey Park, Calif., in 1980.When that indictment was returned in 1980, Subias posted bail and then fled, remaining a fugitive until he was arrested April 1, 1988, in Salt Lake City.
Following his Salt Lake arrest, Utah federal prosecutors also charged him with five counts of possession of illegal and forged identification documents.
Investigators said Subias owns cattle ranches in Oklahoma and Texas, had bank deposits of at least $3.5 million, and had been living off and on in northern Utah at the time of his arrest.
