Erik McMillan of the New York Jets, who led the AFC with eight interceptions, was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year by The Associated Press.

McMillan, a free safety from Missouri drafted on the third round, was the only rookie defensive player named to the Pro Bowl. Linebacker Chris Spielman of the Detroit Lions was a distant runner-up.
