A former professional football player surrendered to police Friday after allegedly stabbing his wife to death during an argument, police said.

Lewis Bennett, 25, a replacement player with the New York Giants during the NFL players strike in 1987, surrendered to Waterbury police at 12:15 p.m. Friday - about an hour after he allegedly stabbed his wife to death in their Hamden apartment, Hamden police Lt. Donald R. Gray said.
