Three family members who barricaded themselves inside their foreclosed house surrendered Thursday after a 15-hour standoff that began when someone fired shots at police trying to serve an eviction notice.

Before dawn, officers finally coaxed Raymond Baumiller, his mother, Katherine, and his 24-year-old sister from the house, police said.Baumiller, 38, was arraigned before a Canonsburg magistrate on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person. He was held in lieu of $10,000 bond. The women were not charged.

No one was hurt in the standoff, which ended about 5:30 a.m.

"The American dream has turned into the American nightmare," Mrs. Baumiller said after the family surrendered. She accused her mortgage lender of conspiring with others, whom she did not name, to foreclose on the house after her husband died in 1980.

"There's no indication in our files that there was any dispute of that nature," said Richard L. White, president of Washington Federal Savings & Loan Association.
