Rose princesses
PASADENA, CALIF.
Kristin Henry of the San Marino, Calif., Ward and Jill Nielsen of the La Canada, Calif., Ward served as princesses for the 1988 Tournament of Roses in Pasadena, Calif. Kristin is president of the San Marino High School varsity dance team and an officer in other school clubs. Jill, a sophomore at Pasadena City College, teaches Sunday School, works as a teacher's aide and wants to be an elementary school teacher.
Couple heads milkers
MERIDIAN, IDAHO
William and Cynthia McKay of the Meridian, Idaho, 14th ward were elected National chairman couple of the National Milk Producers Federation of Young Dairy Farmers. The organization includes dairy farmers under 35 years of age. McKay also was elected president of the Pacific Northwest region of the Young Dairy Farmers.
Elected mayor
SANTA CLARITA CITY, CALIF.
Howard P. "Buck McKeon of the Solemint Ward, Los Angeles California Santa Clarita Stake, was elected mayor of Santa Clarita, a new city of 110,000 people formed from an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County. A former counselor in the stake presidency and bishop, McKeon has lived in the Santa Clarita Valley for 24 years. He received the highest number of votes out of 25 candidates.
Chosen to fly
OREM, UTAH
Dean W. Lee, a returned missionary in the Orem, Utah, 13th Ward, was one of 10 cadets in the nation to be chosen to fly with the British Royal Air Force in England. He lived the life of a Royal Air Force officer for two weeks, learning first hand a pilot's responsibilities and duties.
LDS wins pageant
EUGENE, ORE.
Tracey Wilson, Laurel President in the Santa Clara 1st Ward, Eugene Oregon Santa Clara Stake, was named "Miss Teen of Oregon" and represented the state in the national pageant. She is a 4.0 student, member of the student council, co-captain of the rally squad, president of academic club and editor of the newspaper at North Eugene High School.
Receives grant
MONTPELIER, VT.
Gail Pasotti, Relief Society instructor in the Montpelier, Vt., Ward, was awarded the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship for Vermont for a land development and management program. The grant provides $25,000 from the U.S. Department of Education in honor of Challenger astronaut, Sharon Christa McAuliffe. Sister Pasotti's program offers students the opportunity to study, develop and manage a 40-acre parcel of land near the Northfield, Vt., school, where she teaches biology.
Advances at Interior
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Roland G. Robison of the Salt Lake Monument Park 12th Ward has been named to the No. 2 position in the U.S. Bureau of Land Management of the Department of Interior. Since 1981, he has been the bureau's state director in Utah. He is a former bishop, high councilor and member of the Aaronic Priesthood Young Men General Board.
Multiple missionaries
The following families have three missionaries serving in the field:
- David and Linda Amato of the Covina California Stake have daughter Lisa in the Philippines Baguio Mission, and sons Sean in the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Mission and David in the Brazil Sao Paulo North Mission.
- Elder Walter T. and Sister Ruth F. Stewart are serving in the Ghana Accra Mission and son Samuel is proselyting in the Virginia Roanoke Mission.
Cited for work
Don Bruce of the Cole Harbour Ward and stake clerk in the Dartmouth Nova Scotia Stake received the prestigious Award of Merit, given by the Canadian government to its most exceptional employees. Bruce has saved his country large amounts of money through his work in automation. He and his wife, Rose, have served in several Church leadership positions and have three missionaries - sons Charles and Paul serving as companions in the Canada Montreal Mission and Eddie in the Canada Toronto Mission. Two other children are preparing for missions.

PLEASANT HILL, CALIF.
Artel Ricks, bishop of the Pleasant Hill, Calif., 2nd Ward, was awarded the highest recognition given a professional in the information and records management field. He received the Emmett Leahy award, given to only 17 individuals since its inception 20 years ago. Ricks, director of the Standards and Automation Division of the National Archives, has developed handbooks on subjects ranging from file operations to information retrieval and office automation.
Two top cowboys
LAS VEGAS, NEV.
Louis K. Feild of Eld Ridge, Utah, 2nd Ward, and Lance Robinson of the Farmington, Utah, 3rd Ward were first and second, respectively, in the all-around Cowboy competition of the National Finals Rodeo here. Feild took home $140,000 in 1987 while Robinson earned $114,000. A returned missionary, Robinson was quoted in a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association brochure as saying, "The Bible and the Book of Mormon get you goal-oriented and committed to life. Anybody that's committed to one area can move to another area more easily."

OGDEN, UTAH
Ronald Grant Robinson, a returned missionary in the Ogden, Utah, 92nd Ward has been elected student body president of Weber State College and also of the Utah Student Association. A native of Lake Oswego, Ore., Robinson is chairman of the Utah Council of Student Body Presidents and an active member of Sigma Gamma Chi, the LDS fraternity at WSU.
Earns all badges
IONA, IDAHO
Steve Sweat of the Iona, Idaho, 1st Ward, has completed all 119 merit badges in the Scouting prgram before his 18th birthday. Now a student at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, Steve earned his Eagle badge at 13 and served as president of his deacons and teachers quorums as well as first assistant in the priests quorum. He has just been called to the Japan Kobe Mission.
Prep iron man
WHITE SHIELD, N.D.
Fred Fox, 15, of the New Town Branch, South Dakota Rapid City Mission, is making a mark nationally in cross country competition and in the grueling triathlon. Fred captured 2nd in the National High School Triathlon Championship in Haneli, Hawaii, after placing in state and national cross country competition.
Noted for research
FT. COLLINS, COLO.
Sterling R. Olsen, patriarch in the Ft. Collins Colorado Stake, received the Bouyoucos Soil Science Distinguished Career Award for his illustrious career in agricultural research. He is most recognized for developing a soil phosphorus test used worldwide for increasing crop production. The former bishop just retired after 40 years of teaching agronomy at Colorado State University.
LDS youths shine
Mandi Marie Lucero, 8, of the Lampasas, Texas, Branch and Alan Lewis, 11, of the Lake Villa, Ill., Ward earned high honors in recent competitions. Mandi, who recently moved from Farmington, N.M., represented New Mexico in the Miss Jr. America Show in Beverly Hills, Calif. Alan was one of five young people to win the grand prize in a nationwide poster competition.
Two make 100
Mary Ellen Greer of Kingman, Ariz., 1st Ward and Joseph L. Petersen, patriarch of the Winslow Arizona Stake, celebrated their 100th birthdays recently. Sister Greer was born in St. Johns, Ariz., where she spent most her life and was active in the Church. Petersen, believed to be the oldest active patriarch in the Church, is an Arizona native, born in Pinedale. He served a mission to Canada from 1910-1913 and a second mission to the Central States in 1925.
