Two local retailers have been disqualified from the federal food stamp program for repeatedly accepting food stamps for ineligible items.

Highland Market, 2960 S. Highland Dr., and Eighth Street Market, 801 S. Eighth East, have been barred from participating in the program for six months.David B. Alspach, regional administrator of the USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, said the markets accepted food stamps for alcoholic beverages, leather gloves, toiletries, laundry and dish detergents, plastic bags, shampoo, toothpaste and razors. By law, the stamps can only be used to buy food for human consumption.
