Catholic Community Services will receive nothing from Salt Lake County this year, commissioners have decided.
Reeling from a cutback in money the county annually passes from the state to local social service agencies, commissioners decided Monday they can no longer afford to fund the program, which provides counseling for the poor.Of the 17 programs funded last year, nine will receive cuts this year.
Catholic Community Services has a budget of more than $100,000 and received $16,200 from the county last year, officials said.
Commissioners blame the shortfall on the state, which annually receives the money from the federal government and sends 20 percent of it on to counties. This year the state withheld an additional $199,000 from counties to pay for extra juvenile-detention costs.
The state took responsibility for juvenile detention away from the county in 1987, but it soon ran into costs that exceeded expectations.
