Several preschool children who became ill after receiving the wrong immunization shots Tuesday at a Salt Lake County Health clinic were well on the road to recovery Friday, a department official said.

Pauline Brown, director of nursing for the health department, said an error was made by a nurse. At least one child but possibly as many as eight received the wrong vaccine when a nurse apparently gave them inoculations of a typhoid vaccine instead of the standard DPT vaccine."The children had a reaction to the vaccine," she said, adding that anyone receiving the typhoid vaccine would have felt ill.

Most of the children had recovered by Thursday. They may not have been as perky as normal, but they were over their sickness, Brown said.

Health Department Director Harry Gibbons had a nurse visit the home of each child suspected of receiving the wrong vaccine.
