The University of Utah Research Foundation has bought the 32,000-square-foot American Red Cross Building at the corner of Wasatch Boulevard and Foothill Drive. The purchase price was $900,000 and the assumption of a $300,000 mortgage, the foundation's board of trustees said.

The facility will be leased to the University Hospital and will become the new home for the departments of family and community medicine and sports medicine. The Research Foundation, a non-profit corporation established in 1970, manages the University of Utah Research Park and the University's Technology Transfer Program.

Dale R. Gunnell, University Hospital associate administrator for finance, said the hospital desperately needs more space to house existing clinical services. "This will move Family and Community Medicine and Sports Medicine out of the hospital to a nearby location more accessible to the public," he said.
