Moses might feel right at home visiting Rock Creek in Duchesne County, because sand washing through the new Upper Stillwater Dam has temporarily colored the water red.

Wave action is picking up fine grains of sand left in the reservoir basin while the dam was under construction. The possibility of this happening was anticipated by the Bureau of Reclamation, but the federal agency that built the dam wanted people visiting campgrounds and fishing areas along Rock Creek over the Easter holiday weekend to be warned about what they will see."We just started seeing this in the last day or so," said bureau spokesman Barry Wirth. "We're trying to get ahead of the questions by indicating what's going on."

The bureau is studying the situation to see if the sand might pose problems for the micro-invertibrates the fish feed on. State and federal wildlife and water-quality agencies have also been notified about the red water.
