Thousands of worshipers filled Havana's Roman Catholic cathedral for a joyous Mass celebrated by Cardinal John O'Connor of New York, who reportedly met later with leader Fidel Castro.

A spokesman for the Foreign Relations Ministry said Castro received O'Connor at about 11 p.m. Wednesday. The substance of the talks was not given. Reporters were taken to the palace at 9:30 p.m. but never saw the two.

A meeting between between Castro and O'Connor had been expected since the cardinal's arrival in Havana on Tuesday.

About 2,000 people poured into the 284-year-old cathedral in Havana's colonial district for O'Connor's first Mass in the capital.
