Will Fort Douglas face another attempt to shut it down in the name of economy?

A new commission looking at saving money in the Pentagon may be looking at the Utah base over the next year, and Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, is willing to see the base closed but only if he sees irrefutable proof that a shutdown will save money.Owens said Wednesday that facilities at Fort Douglas, which has repeatedly been scrutinized for possible closure over the years, are currently filled with federal employees who would have to be housed elsewhere, probably at greater cost. He doubts a shutdown would actually save money.

It if were abandoned by the Defense Department, the fort would probably have to be maintained by the National Park Service anyway.

But if Fort Douglas is closed, Owens said he wants to see much of its land go to the University of Utah, which has long wanted the acreage to expand its campus.
