Some visitors at the National Zoo got more than they bargained for when an unexpected guest an 11-year-old orangutan joined them for a picnic of fried chicken and soft drinks.

The ape, Bonnie, its infant grasping mother's shaggy brown hair, apparently figured out before zoo employees that a wire rimming the outdoor enclosure, which would normally give a mild shock to presumptuous primates, malfunctioned.Bonnie and the infant orangutan climbed out of the enclosure and were free until zoo keepers lured the animals back with bananas about 45 minutes later, zoo spokesman Bob Hoage said Wednesday.

While venturing no further than 10 feet from their home, Bonnie still managed to attract a group of human visitors and prod them into handing over a lunch that included fried chicken and a cup of cola.
