Scholastic excellence, leadership and community service accumulated during years of high school studies paid off for 36 students Tuesday evening.

Twelve winners and 24 runners-up were announced during ceremonies in Uintah High School during the 8th annual Sterling Scholars of Northeast Utah. The program, patterned after the Deseret News-KSL program instituted 27 years ago, is the last of five to be held.Others included the Wasatch Front and those in southeast, southwest and central Utah.

The top students were selected during judging earlier in the day and announced during the program. Master of ceremonies was Derek Spriggs, area coordinator with the office of high school relations at Brigham Young University.

Musical numbers were presented by Michael Morgan, Dugway; Suzanne Hales, Uintah, and Carolynn Toronto, Wasatch, winner and runners-up in the category of music. Each candidate in the category had to be prepared with a number if selected as one of the top three.

Award presentations were made by committee members from the Daggett, Duchesne, Morgan, North Summit, Park City, South Summit, Rich, Tooele, Uintah and Wasatch school districts.
