Groundbreaking ceremonies for Utah's regional prison will get under way at 3 p.m. May 3 at the site north of Gunnison.

Gov. Norm Bangerter will lead a delegation of state dignitaries, including Sen. Cary Peterson, R-Nephi, and Rep. Ray Nielson, D-Fairview, who will represent the Legislature.

Other speakers will include Gary DeLand, executive director, Utah Department of Corrections; Neal Stowe, director of the Utah Division of Facilities and Construction; Gunnison Mayor Bruce Blackham; and Dr. Wendell McGarry, Sanpete County Commission chairman.

Contracts have been and are being let for some phases of construction. Thorn Bros. Construction will have equipment on the scene for excavating following ground-breaking ceremonies.

The first phase of construction will provide 633 inmate beds and is expected to be completed in March 1990. The second phase will be completed in 1994.
