A May 27 preliminary hearing has been set in 1st Circuit Court for two teenagers charged with severely beating a Logan man in a gravel pit last February.

Dean H. Hawker, 36, remains in serious condition in a Salt Lake hospital after being semicomatose for about two weeks. Police still are waiting for his condition to improve so they can interview him.

Tracy Kendrick, 19, Millville, and Shayne Rhodes, 18, Wellsville, are charged with third-degree aggravated assault, a felony, in the incident. Neither defendant appeared at the arraignment Thursday. They were represented by their attorneys.

Following the arraignment, Cache County Sheriff's Detective Bill Larsen said he hopes Hawker will be out of the hospital and able to attend the preliminary hearing.

Hawker suffered skull and facial fractures, lacerations and a collapsed lung.

Kendrick and Rhoades also face trial in May on misdemeanor charges of assault and disorderly conduct in an attack on two Logan teenagers the same evening Hawker was beaten.
