After years of study and design, the state's new data processing building is officially open following ribbon-cutting ceremonies Tuesday morning at the State Capitol.
The building was originally proposed in 1981 to house and protect one of the state's most valuable resources - information storage and processing equipment. It took five years to do the necessary studies. Workers broke ground in April 1987, and the state Division of Data Processing will complete the move to the new confines in July.The one-story building is designed to withstand a severe earthquake. The electrical system includes two stand-by diesel generators with 1,500 kilowatts capacity.
Data processing, which operates as a service bureau for state government, manages 130 billion characters of disk storage and 33,000 reels of computer tape.
