Some 15 workers were evacuated after a Tuesday morning ammonia leak at the Bonneville Canning Coca Cola plant, 3270 W. 23rd South.

Crews inside the plant were sanitizing part of the plant's distribution system when pressure in a piped ammonia line climbed from 30 pounds to 250 pounds per square inch, opening a safety relief valve shortly after 5 a.m., said Tony Glezos, hazardous materials team leader, West Valley City Fire Department. The safety valve released the ammonia gas into the air, but fumes were drawn back inside by the building's ventilation system.

Workers inside were evacuated, and 60 employees just arriving for work were kept outside until the fumes could be cleared from the building, which took about three hours, Glezos said. No injuries were reported.
