DEPRESSED BUDD RETURNS TO SOUTH AFRICA

SHARE DEPRESSED BUDD RETURNS TO SOUTH AFRICA

Exhausted and depressed, South African-born runner Zola Budd returned to her homeland after abandoning her controversial bid to run for Britain in the Seoul Olympics. Budd's decision left anti-apartheid activists claiming victory in their campaign against the 21-year-old, a campaign launched when she took British citizenship four years ago.

Budd, who first rose to prominence six years ago as a barefoot teen-age sensation, said she would stay out of competition for at least a year and concentrate on recuperating from what she called "nervous exhaustion."
