A Roy man has been arrested in connection with the death of Weber State College golfer Mark Doherty, who died from head injuries resulting from a scuffle, police said Monday.
Dave Mathews, 23, was booked into the Weber County Jail on Sunday and released later that night on his own recognizance, investigators said. The Weber County attorney's office was screening the case to determine whether to pursue prosecution or if it might have been self-defense, Police Capt. Marlin Balls said.
"We don't know if it was provoked or unprovoked. That's why we're waiting for the county attorney to decide," Balls said.
Doherty, 21, Cheyenne, Wyo., was pronounced dead late Saturday, some 16 hours after the incident in a parking lot outside an Ogden hotel.
He apparently had attended a party and was trying to get a ride when a motorist who had been partying in a separate location exchanged words with him, investigators said.
Doherty, a Weber State junior, was the school's No. 4 golfer, officials said.
