A small plane flying below federal altitude requirements for the Grand Canyon crashed at an overlook, killing two people, authorities said Tuesday.

The Cessna 182 hit two pine trees late Monday, exploded into flames and disintegrated, killing the two people aboard and scattering debris across the Vista Encantada Overlook on the north rim, said Chuck Lundy, a management assistant for Grand Canyon National Park. The names of the victims were not immediately available.

Lundy said the aircraft was not a tour flight and authorities were trying to determine whether the pilot was commercial or private.
