The Salt Lake City Council wants to know what residents think about Mayor Palmer DePaulis' $80.3 million general fund budget.

The council will hold a public hearing at 6:20 p.m. May 24 in the Council Chambers on the third floor of temporary City Hall, 324 S. State. The council will adopt the city's budget June 9.

DePaulis' proposed budget recommends no fee or tax increases, but calls for service level cuts. Among the most controversial of the mayor's recommended cuts are elimination of the crime prevention and crime analysis units of the Police Department and the pet ownership education program in the city's Animal Control division.

Other cuts include consolidation of two eastside fire stations and closure of one while a new station is being built; turning off some street lights on major streets; cutting more than 20 city government positions.

The mayor also recommended no merit raises for city employees and delaying some scheduled capital improvement projects.
