A former Salt Lake police officer has been ordered to appear in 3rd District Court on charges he stole drugs and money.

Gary Dean Coonradt, 35, charged with felony theft and possession of cocaine, has waived his right to a preliminary hearing before 3rd Circuit Judge Eleanor Van Sciver.

Waiving such a hearing usually indicates a plea bargain has been negotiated.

Coonradt, a 4-year veteran with the department, was arrested May 2 after an undercover internal investigation revealed that $375 and 19 grams of cocaine were missing from a briefcase that he was supposed to have booked into the police evidence room, according to the charges.
