Dr. Donald B. Olsen, director of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Artificial Heart Research Laboratory at the University of Utah, has received the second annual Governor's Medal for Science and Technology.
The State Advisory Council for Science and Technology selected Ol-sen to recognize his "past achievements and promise of continued excellence in the field."Olsen was a member of the surgical team that performed the first clinical implant of a total artificial heart in Dr. Barney Clark in 1982. Since then, he and his team have trained some 25 surgeons worldwide to do the procedure.
