Provo's Garth Ford birdied the first hole in a sudden-death playoff with Arlen Peacock to win the Utah Golf Association Senior championship Thursday at Glenmoor Golf Course.
Peacock made up three shots in the second day of the 36-hole event, shooting a 2-under-par 70 to tie Ford in regulation play. In the playoff, Peacock played an approach shot to within 20 feet of the hole, but missed his birdie attempt. Ford, whose second shot on the par-5 No. 1 hole found a greenside bunker, blasted to eight feet and made the putt for the victory.Ford received the Deseret News traveling trophy for the win, following his rounds of 72 and 73. In the process, Ford qualified for the State Amateur and the Utah Open and will join peacock in filling two of the four senior amateur spots for the Browning Challenge Cup matches in September.
Peacock received the top prize in the 55-59 age group, followed by Ray Goodrich and Cecil Bohn. With Ford the overall winner, Vaughn Barker (78-77-155) was first in the 60-64 group, followed by Gordon Milne and Jim Woodward. Jack Ridd (77-70-147) was third overall and won the 65-69 group, with Harold Larsen second and Glen Lewis third.
Bill Bowden (80-84-164) won the 70-and-over division, followed by Boyce Lake and Keith Temple.
Next on the UGA schedule is the Mid-Ameteur in Logan, June 3-4.
