A Continental Airlines DC-9 with 84 people aboard narrowly missed colliding with a small plane when the jetliner's pilot took evasive action while preparing to land, a Federal Aviation Administration official said Tuesday.

The encounter occurred in restricted air space at about 7,000 feet Monday afternoon about 5 miles southeast of Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport.

"The small plane did not show up on radar. We don't know if he had a transponder or, if he had one, if it was on," said spokesman Mort Edelstein from his Chicago office. A transponder makes an aircraft more visible on radar.
