Police were seeking Wednesday the bandit who stole an undisclosed amount of money from a South Salt Lake bank Tuesday afternoon.

It was South Salt Lake's first bank robbery in three years. The bandit entered First Interstate Bank, 39 W. 21st South, about 3 p.m., loitered in the lobby, then approached the bank manager, said Detective Sgt. Jim Foster.

The robber showed the manager a small, black automatic pistol in a waistband and said he wanted money but without booby traps. The manager retrieved some money from a teller cage and handed it to the bandit, who then fled, Foster said.

Witnesses described the bandit as Caucasian, in his late 20s, 6 feet 2 inches tall, about 150 pounds, with light brown hair and dirty, collar-length hair. He wore sun glasses, dirty blue jeans, a short denim jacket, a white T-shirt, canvas tennis shoes and a dark brown stocking cap that was rolled up "sailor style," Foster said.
