The Minnesota Twins asked waivers on veteran pitcher Joe Niekro, one of the most successful knuckleballers ever, for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.
Niekro, 43, becames the third Twins pitcher older than 35-year-old general manager Andy MacPhail to be released since opening day. He follows Steve Carlton, 43, and Tippy Martinez, 37.
