A Salt Lake shoe store bandit may be at it again. Saturday morning a gunman robbed a Payless Shoesource store, 2219 Highland Drive - the third Payless store to be hit in as many months, according to police.
"The descriptions of the individual are the same. In all likelihood it is the same person," Salt Lake Police Lt. Tom Brown said. The man entered the store about 10 a.m. Saturday and looked at a pair of gray hiking boots. He went out to his car and came back with a briefcase, pulled out a large pistol and asked the store clerk for the money in the till. He then took an undisclosed amount of money and the boots, Brown said. Only one store clerk was on duty at the time.
The robber was described as a white male, 22 to 25 years old, with red hair, wearing a blue sweater, blue jeans and black tennis shoes.
He left the scene in a small blue compact vehicle thought to be either a Volkswagen Jetta or Rabbit, police said.
Saturday's robbery was the fourth in recent months for Salt Lake area Payless stores. A store at 812 E. 21st South was robbed in late February and again on March 29. On March 3, about $1,000 was taken from the Payless store at 727 E. 33rd South.
