2 SETS OF PLATES MAKE UP THE BOOK OF MORMON

SHARE 2 SETS OF PLATES MAKE UP THE BOOK OF MORMON

Although the various peoples of the Book of Mormon kept many different types of records, only two sets of plates were translated by Joseph Smith to make up the present Book of Mormon. They were:

1. The Small Plates of Nephi.

- These plates were started in approximately 570 B.C. and contained primarily a religious history of the peoples of Lehi for the first 470 years of their existence.

- Translation of these plates comprises the first 143 pages of the present edition of the Book of Mormon and includes the books of 1 Nephi, 2 Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jarom and Omni.

- Some of the teachings of the plates of brass were copied onto these plates. The plates of brass were obtained from Laban and contained the five books of Moses and many of the same books found in the present-day Old Testament, including the book of Isaiah. In addition, the plates contained teachings of many additional prophets, including Zenos, Zenock, Ezias and Neum.

- These plates, containing the "first person" account of the various writers, had not been abridged by anyone at any time.

2. The Plates of Mormon.

- These plates contained an abridgment by Mormon of the books initially recorded on the large plates of Nephi.

The large plates of Nephi were started in about 589 B.C. and contained both a religious and secular history. These plates, which also included some extracts from the plates of brass, served as the official record of the Nephites for nearly the entire time of their existence.

- Also included on the plates of Mormon was Moroni's abridgment of the plates of Ether. These plates contained the history of the Jaredite people, who came to the promised land at the time of "the great tower" of Babel. The plates also contained an account of the creation of the world and of major events seen in vision by the brother of Jared that were to occur on earth. The plates of Ether were translated by Mosiah from the 24 gold plates found by Limhi's expedition.

- The plates contained "first person" accounts by Mormon and Moroni. Books in the present edition of the Book of Mormon from Mormon's abridgments are Mosiah, Alma, Helaman, 3 Nephi, 4 Nephi and the first seven chapters of Mormon. The section entitled "The Words of Mormon" may also have been written on these plates. Moroni's abridgments and additions comprise the last two chapters of Mormon, the books of Ether and Moroni, and the title page of the Book of Mormon.

Engravers on the small plates of Nephi were: Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jarom, Omni, Amaron, Chemish, Abinadom, and Amaleki. Engravers on the plates of Mormon were Mormon and Moroni.

However, all but Nephi, Jacob, Mormon and Moroni made only brief contributions. Their combined writings comprise just 7 1/2 pages of the present Book of Mormon.
