This weekend, Utahns will have a rare chance to see a Salt Lake area canyon that remains in nearly pristine condition, much of it as it was when the pioneers arrived 141 years ago.
Red Butte Canyon, a 5-mile natural research area near the University of Utah Medical Center, is normally off-limits, kept behind locked gates so scientists can make studies about water quality, native plants, fish and animals.Occasionally disabled veterans are allowed to fish in Red Butte Reservoir.
Dick Kline, district ranger for Wasatch-Cache National Forest, said that on both June 4 and 5, the gates will be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Visitors can walk in only, and must stay on roads or trails. They can carry in picnic lunches and should carry out everything they bring.
They will be asked to register at a sign-up sheet at the gate. Visitors will be given maps with information and trails shown. No open fires, pets or fishing will be allowed.
