Americans with an appreciation for the importance of accurate history should cheer newly disclosed plans for a Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, Calif.

Approving of a presidential library, of course, is far different from approving of a presidency. Nixon's abuse of the nation's highest office and his resignation in disgrace are not reasons to fail to build a presidential library. Such a facility will allow easy public access to the millions of pages of official papers and other items that record the Nixon presidency. In fact, it might be even more important to study failed administrations than to ponder successful ones.Midwesterners who have taken advantage of the Truman Library in Independence, Mo.; the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kan.; the Hoover Library in West Branch, Iowa; and the Ford Library in Grand Rapids, Mich., don't have to be convinced of their value. The Nixon Library, too, will benefit the public.
