Merna L. Smith is the new associate director of public services for the Salt Lake Public Library. She's no stranger to the city library system, having served as the head of the business and science department there from 1985-86.

She returns to Salt Lake City from Dallas, where she was information manager for the largest advertising agency in the Southwest, Bozell, Jacobs, Kenyon & Eckhardt Inc.

Smith, who holds a master's of library science from the University of Hawaii, has also worked as the corporate librarian with Getty Mining Co., information services coordinator with the University of Phoenix and as market research analyst and director of information services with Peat, Marwick.
