China has sent a delegation to the United States to monitor the American presidential election and study democracy in action, an official newspaper said Friday.

The 10-member group, which left Wednesday, will attend the conventions of the Democratic and Republican parties and interview presidential candidates and other important politicians, the Legal Daily reported. The daily said Chinese delegates planned to meet with American politicians to discuss U.S.-Chinese relations and China's economic and political development.

The delegation is made up of members of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, a scholarly group; and the Law Association of the National People's Congress, China's legislature.

The newspaper said the delegation was invited by the Washington-based Center for Democracy, which includes members of both American political parties. It advocates democratic change throughout the world.

Under the liberalization program begun by senior leader Deng Xiaoping, China has begun to reform its political system to include elements of democracy.
