A Roy man who pleaded no contest to negligent homicide in the May 14 death of a Weber State College golfer was sentenced Friday to 90 days in jail and 18 months probation.

Second Circuit Judge W. Brent West also ordered David Scott Mathews, 23, Roy, to pay a $750 fine, undergo counseling and stay away from alcohol, a court clerk said.Mathews was charged with causing the death of Mark Doherty, 21, Cheyenne, Wyo., by punching him twice in the face. Police said Doherty fell over backward and struck his head on a concrete parking terrace floor, causing fatal internal injuries.

Mathews pleaded no contest last month in the case, a plea treated the same as an admission of guilt for purposes of sentencing in a criminal case.

West sentenced Mathews to one year in jail, but then suspended all but 90 days on the condition he comply with conditions of probation and pay the fine.
