A Brigham Young University student has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a fellow student who died in a July 7 auto accident in Provo Canyon, according to court documents.Patrick Harold Newton, 18, of Scottsdale, Ariz., was charged with second-degree felony manslaughter in the death of Julianna Crosby, 18, a student from Tennessee, according to information filed recently in 4th Circuit Court.

He is scheduled appear in court July 27.

Newton was driving when his eastbound vehicle went out of control on a curve on U.S. 189, slid across the road, down an embankment and landed in the Provo River during the early morning, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Newton escaped the submerged vehicle, but Crosby was trapped and drowned.
