S. Duane Richens, a trooper who worked his way to second in command before retiring two years ago, has been appointed superintendent of the Utah Highway Patrol, officials said Wednesday.

Richens replaces Mike Chabries, who recently was hired as Salt Lake City's new police chief.Richens, 52, has been working as a communication coordinator for the Utah Department of Public Safety since retiring from the UHP in 1986. A native of the Uintah Basin, he became a UHP trooper in 1960 and worked his way up to lieutenant colonel before retiring.
