Authorities hope to have a 50-mile stretch of I-15 between Scipio and Cove Fort reopened by Saturday morning.

But officials were unsure late Friday if they could meet that deadline, as crews continued to clean up some 240 gallons of spilled sodium cyanide pellets that forced closure of the freeway early Thursday morning.Cleanup crews were hindered in their efforts to complete recovery of the highly toxic pellets Friday by high temperatures that made working in plastic protective gear difficult. The extreme heat caused workers to tire quickly, slowing down the effort.

Traffic has been detoured to U.S. 89 via U.S. 50 since the accident, adding about 90 minutes to the normal driving time.
